Cinnaminson was the first municipality to participate in theservice offered by the Commission free of charge. Mayor Ben Youngwas at the facility for the inaugural wash at 10 a.m. on July 18.
By his estimates his township could save around $50 per vehicle infuel costs and manpower alone.
"This is what shared services is all about," said Young. "TheBridge Commission is saving the taxpayers of Cinnaminson thousandsof dollars in fuel and other costs which would be involved withwashing our vehicles at a remote location. This is just a marvelousidea."
According to Young, the township committee had set aside funds inthis past year's budget to construct its own washing facility tocomply with state regulations for next year, but may forgoconstruction opting instead to continue use of the bridgecommission's new facility.
Cinnaminson had been using a similar washing facility offered bythe County located in Pemberton.
On average this shared services looks save towns around $2,000 to$5,000 per year, depending on their size, verses the costs incurredby using outside services like car washes for police and othermunicipal vehicles.
In addition to Cinnaminson, Riverton and Palmyra have expressedinterest in using the facilities.
Riverton Councilman Robert E. Smyth visited the site to get an ideaof how this service could benefit the people of his town.
"It's important for us to look at ways to keep costs down for thetaxpayers," said Smyth.
To accommodate further municipalities the commission plans to setup a schedule for towns looking to use the facility on a weeklybasis, explained Liz Verna, director of communications for thecommission. Townships would still need to provide supplies andmanpower while using the facility.
Towns interested in using the facility are asked to contact theBurlington County Bridge Commission.
According to Verna, another wash facility is planned for theBurlington City area, near the Commission's Burlington-BristolBridge maintenance area.
