Other types of mobile applications are also seeing surgingpopularity among consumers, Amplitude found.
A good portion of respondents said they are comfortable customizingtheir mobile phones with new applications and services, with 39percent having downloaded games, online photo tools, stock tickersand business applications onto devices. Just over 21 percent haveadded at least six or more applications.
When asked to pick their favorite applications, 42 percent optedfor stock tracker software, while 36.6 percent wanted sporttickers. Less popular downloads were business software, at 10.3percent, productivity apps, with just 7.5 percent of the vote, andutilities, at 4.8 percent.
The growing prominence of e-mail and Web access features could begood news for handset makers heavily focused on developing advanced applications, and wireless carriers investing in 4G technologies to deliver better and faster mobileconnectivity.
The survey's results also bode well for the mobile browser market, which is predicted to grow to 1.5billion units by 2013.
Vendors are also gambling that interest in mobile media continuesto strengthen, with handset players like Nokia adding new video-related capabilities to their mobile devices.
Another feature that continues to gain popularity is Bluetooth,which is the technology most-used by consumers for hands-freecontrol their mobile devices while driving.
The decade-old wireless networking topped the list, with 62 percent ofrespondents saying they preferred to use Bluetooth accessories forhands-free operation, versus 51 percent who opt instead for astandard hands-free microphone.
Only about 12 percent said they would use voice recognitionsoftware while driving, and 18.5 percent have no desire to talk,text or cruise the Web while driving.
