From two to five inches of snow fell, April 28, "and traveling conditions were very dangerous throughout the day. Conditions along the Lake Shore road were described as especially hazardous."

The School Board named Dr. Augusta M. Nichols, retired superintendent of the Manchester schools, as supervisor of the elementary schools of the city on a part-time basis, effective Oct. 1. "She will succeeed Fred Wilkinson, who is leaving Sept. 15 to study for his doctor of education degree at Harvard."

Belknap County commissioners awarded a contract for installation of a two-way radio system for the sheriff's department, for $2,587. "The contract calls for installation of a base station, which will be at the sheriff's office in the court house, four mobile units, and a 50 foot antenna which will probably be located on the roof of the court house annex. Sheriff Rodney Crockett and three of his deputies will have the radios installed in their cars. At present Sheriff Crockett is tied in with the state police radio system, which he will retain, but none of the deputies have radios."

Albert Foy of Concord was granted a permit to erect a $100,000 store building on the Pynn lot on Union Ave. "The building will be occupied by the new Champagne's Grand Union supermarket. It will have a ground floor space of 16,100 square feet and a a basement area of 8,000 square feet."

The First National Store at 311 Union Ave. reopened, April 30, after renovations. The store had been closed for two days "to enable workmen to install new fixtures and equipment in the completely remodeled building. By widening the store 31 feet, First National has been able to increase the facilities of its sales, storage and preparation areas." All grocery shelving had been "removed and replaced by specially designed metal shelves. Aisles have been widened and display space increased ... The produce department has been expanded to include a refrigerated display case as well as additional fruits and vegetable tables."

Corriveau's Furniture & Appliances Inc., celebrated its grand opening at 27 Union Ave.

The tall elm tree in front of Woolworth's in Bank Square was being taken down. It was estimated that the tree was more than 100 years old and 65 feet tall. "The trunk was badly rotted."
