A local neighborhood is concerned about a rash of violent crime ontheir block. The Herrin, Illinois police department says a 16 yearold was stabbed in his right arm early July 17th on West TylerStreet, the same area a man was murdered about two weeks ago.
Several of the neighbors are concerned, because they've never seencrime like this before. Venet Campeos' family moved to the areaabout a year ago.
Newschannel 6's Noah Bond asked her, "Is this normal for theneighborhood, to have crime?" She replied, "No NoNo." Bond, "Tell me about your neighborhood. I meanwhat is it like for you?" Campos, "Well it's very quietyeah we don't ever get any disturbances from anybody."
Lately it hasn't been quiet at all. Two serious crimes in just twoweeks. The neighbors blame drugs. They believe one or moredealers are attracting problems, like the one that sent a 16 yearold boy to Herrin's emergency room at 4:29am July 17th.
Neighbors suspect the drug dealers moved in about a year ago, aboutthe time the trouble started. They would like to see more policepatrols, to prevent the violence, like the fight Tony Buckner sawthis week. "There was a little baby involved that almost gothit by a rock by these high school students that we in a car. Thedad retaliated on them," said Buckner.
Until things improve neighbors will be extra careful. "Wejust keep our doors locked an don't usually answer unless there'smore of us here at the door," said Campos.
Eyewitnesses saw three suspects driving away after the stabbing ina white colored passenger car.
