The diversity of this show instantly grabs your attention withclever curation drawing you into and around the gallery. From fineart and furniture design to crafts, graphic design andillustration, the variety of BA degree courses at Oxford & CherwellValley College is fully represented with bold and challengingworks.
Painting is well represented in this show; two large paintings byCarol Nightingale (one pictured) instantly catch your eye, theirscale and composition abstracting the subject matter yetreinforcing its natural beauty. Elsewhere, Neil Cap has usedrecycled aluminium to create large and striking sculptures thatcombine movement, interaction and narrative.
Some of the materials used by Fine Art students connect with worksby Design Crafts and Fashion students with fabric and stitch beingused in inventive and different ways. Inspiration for the oftenstunning works in fashion range from harbours, corsetry and fetishto the Egyptian First Dynasty and the ballet Swan Lake. Many ofthese works are taken from larger installations shown during theannual degree show at OCVC in June and some of the students will beshowing their work at New Designers in London.
Charlotte Knight (who together with Neil Cap will beartists-in-residence at OCVC next year) has playfullyscreen-printed on to paper images inspired by the dashboards anddials of old cars and caravans. Works by Niina Kuosamen and NickAshton incorporate line and drawing in playful, interactive ways, inviting the viewer to participate in and develop the work.
Graphic Design and Illustration combines all kinds of materialsfrom Sophie Weitz's collages and Gemma Frearson's embroidery toTara Lawfull's inventive and humorous taxonomy of junk creating newobjects, labels and meanings.
Martin Carrolchick, lecturer in fine art at the college, said: "Abrief look around the show reveals a diverse mix of artwork thatseems to collapse boundaries between traditional disciplines."
