Now that Murray has an uncluttered mind and a greater clarity ofthought, he has felt able to draw on the lessons from his firstexperience of playing on Wimbledon's second Monday, in the fourthround of the 2006 tournament. On that occasion, he had been almosttoo satisfied with having defeated American Andy Roddick instraight sets to get there, and he was eaten up like afresh-from-the-oven moussaka by Greek Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.
"I wasn't used to anything when I played Baghdatis. That was thefirst time I made the fourth round of a slam," explained Murray. "Iwasn't used to playing tournaments that lasted for more than aweek. And I didn't deal with it very well.
"I didn't play great tennis in that match. I felt I'd reallyachieved something once I'd got there. I was almost happy with whatI'd done in the tournament.
"Now I feel I'm better prepared to go deep into a slam. That'sreally the main difference.
"I've put in the work off the court to believe that I can win aslam.
"I'm sure I'll perform much better against Gasquet than I did acouple of years ago."
This will be Murray's fourth appearance in the fourth round of amajor, as he was also beaten at that stage of the 2006 US Open byRussian Nikolay Davydenko and by Nadal in the last 16 of the 2007Australian Open. But Murray no longer feels that making the fourthround of a slam is a good result. He wants to go further.
Reaching his first slam quarter-final would be an importantprogression in his career, but the 12th seed also has hopes ofgoing on to become the first British male since Fred Perry in 1936to win Wimbledon.
Murray does not just want to wear Perry's branded shirts andshorts; he also wants to emulate him on the court.
"I don't want to have that same satisfied attitude going into thesecond week this time.
"It's almost as if you've got to view it as sort of a newtournament and got to be fired up for the first ball on Monday," hesaid.
He is embracing a life beyond the baseline. "On my days off, I usedto spend too much time watching matches, maybe studying the otherplayers a bit too much.
"If you want to go deep into the tournament, you've got to have abit of time away from the court as well.
