CHESTER City boss Stephen Vaughan was fined £100 following arace day incident in which it was claimed he punched a man who hadbeen abusing him over football.
Vaughan admitted causing intentional harassment, alarm or distressand using threatening or abusive behaviour when he appeared beforemagistrates in Chester on Wednesday.
Anne Rouse, prosecuting, said Vaughan was seen with a group of menin St Werburgh Street, Chester, at about 5pm on May 7.
She said: “CCTV operators saw Vaughan punching a man beforebeing pulled away by one of his friends.
“It was race day and many members of the public were presentand witnessed the incident, which he said was provoked because theman had subjected him to verbal abuse.”
John Hinchcliffe, defending, said: “This is an example of thepressures fame can bring.
“He wanted to have a drink or two with his friends but wassubjected to football-related abuse at the racecourse, which heinitially ignored. The same man continued with the abuse in thecity centre and squared up to him.
“Mr Vaughan is ashamed of what he did but this was merely anattempted assault following on from considerable provocation.
“He is extremely remorseful and feels he has let himselfdown.”
Mr Hinchcliffe suggested a financial penalty would be appropriatebearing in mind Mr Vaughan’s “six-figure” salary.
Magistrate Adrienne Elloy fined him £100 plus a £15victim surcharge and told him to pay £43 costs.
