In response to written questions, FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisneksaid, "The FDA is still in the process of determining howwide-spread the distribution is of Mr. Brown products in the UnitedStates. ... The FDA is stopping every shipment of White RabbitCandies and Mr. Brown coffee products at the ports and testingthem."

In China, powdered milk used to make baby formula was found severalweeks ago to contain melamine, an ingredient that is used to makeplastic and fertilizer.

As the crisis evolved and more infants fell ill with ailments thatincluded kidney stones, Chinese authorities announced that productsfrom as many as 23 Chinese companies could be involved.

Melamine contains nitrogen and can artificially boost protein levelreadings of such items as powdered foods, allowing exporters tocharge more for what appear to be high-protein foods.

Melamine also was found last year in wheat flour from China thatwas used in American pet food and animal feed. The pet foodcontamination led to the illnesses and deaths of thousands of pets.

The Chinese powdered milk scare already has expanded throughoutAsia, parts of Europe and Canada.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) put the blame for the latest melamine problem on China'sfood safety system, which she said is deeply flawed, and filedlegislation Friday that calls for a separate U.S. food safetyagency.

"I think we have to be so concerned and so skeptical of China'sfood safety regulatory system," DeLauro said. "It's a fact thatwhatever exists is so weak that it cannot prevent a product fromeither being deliberately contaminated or inadvertentlycontaminated and then being shipped overseas."

The FDA said it has searched for suspect formula in the UnitedStates.
