Suriname stepped-up safety inspections of food imports from Southeast Asia

PARAMARIBO, Suriname-Surinamese health authorities on Thursdayordered food markets across the South American country to pull apopular Chinese-made candy from their shelves as a precautionarysafety measure.
A toxic chemical illegally added to China's dairy supplies hasturned up in candy and other Chinese-made goods. Tainted powderedmilk already has killed four Chinese babies and sickened more than50,000 others.
Creamy White Rabbit candy has been recalled in several countriessince the British supermarket chain Tesco announced Wednesday itwould stop carrying the sweets.
"Up to this point, we have no indication that these candies aretainted but we did not want to take any chances," said LesleyResida, director of public health, describing Suriname's decisionas a precautionary measure.
Suriname on Wednesday placed a ban on Chinese dairy products and stepped-up safety inspections of food imports from Southeast Asia.
White Rabbit candies are widely available in Suriname, where peopleof Chinese heritage make up roughly 8 percent of the population.
One shopowner of Chinese ancestry, David Cheung, objected to theThursday announcement by health officials.
"They have been sold in Suriname for so many years now and nobodyever got sick from them," Cheung said in his Paramaribo shop beforepopping a White Rabbit candy in his mouth.
White Rabbit candy, already recalled in Singapore and Britain, wasfound to contain "unsatisfactory" levels of melamine, more than sixtimes the legal limit, in a test of 67 dairy products, according tothe Hong Kong government's Center for Food Safety.
Melamine is an industrial chemical used to make plastics andfertilizer, and can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failurewhen consumed.
