Suspect says racial slur provoked attack with frozen chicken

A Jackson man charged with whacking a woman over the head with abag of frozen chicken claims he responded to a racial remark.
"My guy was being antagonized," defense attorney Phillip Berkemeierexplained today to Circuit Judge John McBain.
Frederick McKaney was riding a bike on Woodbridge Street theevening of June 24 when he addressed two white women. McKaney isblack.
"I said, 'How you ladies doing?'" he said Thursday at a probationviolation hearing.
One responded with a racial epithet, he said. Police allege McKaneyrode up and hit her over the head with 10 pounds of chicken.
"He assaulted the woman with a bag of chicken, causing a one-inchlaceration to the back of her head," Assistant Prosecutor NickMehalco said.
