Monica Bononi, lead scientist in the research, explained that ashot pizzas are placed in boxes there is a chance food will beexposed to chemicals in the cardboard.
She said: "Inside the boxes temperatures can reach 60-65C and thepizzas remain hot and inside for several minutes, increasing thechance of toxic substances migrating from packaging to the food."
Scientists at the University of Milan found traces of DIBP in boxesfrom 16 different restaurants in northern Italy.
They found one of box contained more than 70 micrograms of thechemical, and several had more than 40 micrograms.
Dr Bononi said: "This is a clear indication that the boxes had beenmanufactured using at least some recycled paper or cardboard."
However, experts are unsure whether the levels of DIBP found in thepizza boxes could be harmful to human health
About 200,000 takeaway pizzas are eaten everyday in Britain.
