News New Aquatic Clearcast(R) Herbicide from BASF Receives Full LabelApproval from Environmental Protection Agency
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.-(Business Wire)-June 13, 2008 - BASFProfessional Vegetation Management (ProVM) is excited to announcethat Clearcast(R) herbicide has received full label approval fromthe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Clearcast, a new product from BASF ProVM, is designed forvegetation management professionals who require selective aquaticand shoreline weed control with minimal irrigation limitations.Clearcast controls target weeds, leaving desirables unaffected, making it ideal for aquatic areas that support wildlife habitat, fishing and other recreational activities.
Floating, emerged and shoreline species
In 2006 and 2007, Clearcast was applied for vegetation managementthrough an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) in 17 states. Applicationsshowed good control of floating, emerged and shoreline species suchas common salvinia, water hyacinth, watershield, water lily, cattail, phragmites and giant reed. Additionally, targetedapplications can control invasive exotics such as Chinesetallowtree without harming desirable hardwood vegetation.
"Clearcast offers aquatic plant managers a new and innovative toolto manage aquatic invasive species," said Jack Whetstone, AssociateProfessor and Extension Aquatic Specialist, Department of Forestryand Natural Resources, Clemson University. "From our research,Clearcast produced excellent control of Chinese tallowtree. Aninteresting, added benefit of Clearcast, is the selective controlof Chinese tallowtree at specific application rates with no effecton the vast majority of native tree species."
"We performed two applications of Clearcast in 2007 under the EUPon watershield and water lily and were very happy with the results,as was our customer," said Larry Kovar, Owner and President ofAquatic Analysts.
According to the EPA, Clearcast has a very favorable environmentalprofile, and is classified as practically nontoxic to birds, fish, algae and aquatic invertebrates. Clearcast has been granted atolerance exemption by the EPA, which means there are no foodresidue limits for Clearcast in fish, shellfish, crustaceans orirrigated crops, when used as labeled.
Clearcast controls a broad spectrum of floating, emergent andshoreline weeds, including: -0- *T — Alligatorweed —Lotus — Sagittaria — Water Lily — Cattail —Parrotfeather — Smartweed — Watershield — Chinese— Pennywort — Spatterdock Tallowtree — Phragmites— Water Four-Leaf — Common Salvinia —Pickerelweed Clover — Frogbit — Primrose — WaterHyacinth — Giant Reed *T
Flexible application, minimal restrictions
Clearcast may be applied in a variety of ways, including directlyto water for the control of submerged aquatic plant species; as afoliar application specifically for emergent and floating species;and via ground or aerial equipment including both fixed-wing andhelicopter. When applying a foliar application by boat, the boattrail must be adequately sprayed after passing through. Clearcastis also a great tank-mix partner with many other aquaticherbicides. There are minimal irrigation restrictions and norestrictions on swimming, fishing or drinking water.
"Because of the minimal irrigation restrictions, Clearcast can beapplied in a large variety of aquatic environments," said Bo Burns,Aquatic Specialist for BASF ProVM. "Clearcast is ideal for golfcourse ponds and irrigation canals and ditches."
