Coventry food bank plans drive to fill empty shelves
[2008-3-27]
The Coventry Food Bank will have a food drive Saturday, to stock its shelves, which it says are nearly empty.
Hannah Pietrantonio, a volunteer at the food bank, said there is “a severe shortage.
The townwide food drive will take place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Coventry Community Center, the site of the food bank, on Lake Street.

The food bank is operated by the town Human Services Department.
“Our food bank is running low, and whenever we can get the community to chip in and help us provide for the less fortunate in town, that’s always well appreciated,” Human Services Director Courtney Chan said.
The Food Bank normally has food drives around the holiday season in November and December. Chan said donations from the holiday food drives usually last the food bank through the holidays, and volunteers rely on donations the rest of the year.
Saturday’s food drive will be Coventry’s first spring food drive.
“We’re hoping the spring food drive will last us at least until the fall,” Chan said, and added that donations are always welcome at the Human Services office in the Town Hall.
Items most needed are peanut butter; jelly; canned goods such as soups, vegetables, and fruit; spaghetti sauce and pasta; cereal; instant oatmeal; juice; snack foods such as granola bars and fruit snacks; paper goods such as toilet paper and paper towels; personal items including shampoo, deodorant, bar soap, toothpaste, and children’s toothbrushes.
