Main and North Long Lake roads is homemade, hand-cranked ice creamcreated by association member Victor Moore. He distributes freesamples of the creamy, frozen custard.
The old, crank-type freezer was invented by Nancy Johnson, a NewEngland woman, who established this basic method in 1846. She didnot patent the invention, however, William G. Young patented theJohnson Patent Ice-Cream Freezer in 1848. Jacob Fussell inBaltimore established the first large-scale commercial ice creamplant.
Making hand-cranked ice cream was a family enterprise for many.Everyone in the family would take a turn cranking. Sometimes, freshstrawberries or peaches would be added to the ice cream for addedflavor. Later, the electric ice cream machine came on the market,improving on the time and effort of making homemade ice cream.
With the introduction of mechanical refrigeration, this treatbecame both distributable and profitable. The ice cream shop orsoda fountain has since become an icon of American culture, as weall scream for ice cream.
