Canadian company fined for mackerel imports

[2008-6-11]

A Canadian canning company has been fined for illegally importing mackerel from Fiji.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency fined the company $29,296 one count of violating the Fish Inspection Regulations of Canada.

The CFIA said its regulations state no person can import mackerel into Canada or attempt to import unless notification is provided to an inspector before or within 48hours of the importation.

Mr Dwivedi said there were also issues of Fiji shops in Canada importing and retailing kava, which is banned in Canada.

Mr Dwivedi said the issue of a Canadian company that had proposed to use the Fiji name on its label was still being dealt with.

"An application has been filed before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office challenging the application by the company to use the name as a label," he said.

The company is importing fish from Chile and has been displaying Fiji as a brand label on its canned product.
