Radical Improvement to Telecommunications by Emerson DevelopmentIntegrates the Public Switched Telephone Network with the Internet FLANDERS, N.J. --(Business Wire)-- Emerson Development LLCannounces the fifth in a series of communications patents has beenreceived by former 25 year AT&T veteran, Harry Emerson. Withthis patent he now lays claim to a new and secure telephonictechnology known as IronPipe(TM) which makes the rich MultiMediacapabilities of the Internet accessible by phone, and considerablyreduces concerns for security.

"The experience will be similar to accessing a web page with abrowser, but would be done by dialing a phone number," Mr.Emerson said. He predicts that "In this new environment, everyphone will be a website, every phone number will be a domainname", and he anticipates that "this new technology willdefine the next generation of telecommunications".

A secure communications system to support national security

But while rich media and ease of use are key elements in theIronPipe(TM) system, he said that support for national security isthe cornerstone of his vision.

According to a CNN article, prompted by the recent cyber-attack onGeorgia by Russia, the next large-scale military or terroristattack on the United States, if and when it happens, may notinvolve airplanes or bombs or even intruders breaching Americanborders. Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspaceby shadowy hackers half a world away. Internet security expertsbelieve that such an attack could be just as devastating to theU.S.'s economy and infrastructure as a deadly bombing.

"As we all know, the Internet is a lawless frontier, wherereliability is always one step away from calamity," Mr.Emerson said. "We suffer untold numbers of hacker attacksdaily, with systems broken into, identities stolen. VoIP doeslittle to protect the interests of individuals and organizations, not to mention protecting the security of the United States. Theentire worldwide DNS system was brought to its knees by hackersmultiple times in recent years. We all need to ask: Is this what wewant for our telecommunications system? ... Additionally, there arefundamental requirements of Privacy, Secrecy, and Security that areseldom discussed openly with regard to VoIP. But these are seriousissues, and need to be fully considered by users, corporations, telecommunications carriers, VoIP carriers, law enforcementagencies, and federal and state governments.

"By combining the security and reliability of existingtelephone network infrastructure with the efficiency of theInternet, our patented IronPipe(TM) system will go a long waytowards ensuring that Privacy, Secrecy, and Security are achievedin the Next Generation of Telecommunications," Mr. Emersonsaid.

A key part of this system, patent, no. 6,704,305 describesintegrated telephone devices such as screen phones that supportaudible and visual communications across the Internet simply bydialing a telephone number. These integrated phones will have botha telephone connection and an Internet connection. By using digitalcall control messages that are sent to and from the local telephonecentral office, an integrated telephone can set up an InternetMultiMedia call to a compatible phone. If the called phone is notInternet capable, a standard phone call is established.

This next-generation carrier-class Internet Telephony will clearlydifferentiate these providers from traditional VoIP vendors. Thetechnology would likewise allow carriers to expand theirtraditional and cellular services by offering, for example, thetransmission of MultiMedia data using wireline and cellulartelephones (such as the iPhone). This technology will enablecarriers to preserve their investments while introducing suites ofnew landline and cellular services to dramatically increaserevenue.

A new business frontier

With safety and privacy key, opportunities to monetize elements ofhis new technology abound. "Existing VoIP offerings are simplydiscounted POTS service - there are no value-added features,"Mr. Emerson stated, "only lower cost, with fierce pricepressure from cable TV and other low-overhead vendors. The resultis a continued downward spiral on price that has plagued thetelecommunications industry for 30 years." Mr. Emerson's newtechnology offers a re-thinking of architecture and features thatwill enrich telecommunications and enable vendors to chargesignificant premiums for the new services that result. It will be abrand new world. "And," he said, "it will be a saferworld in which we can say that identity theft will not be possible, nor will eavesdropping, or snooping, or tracing calls (except bylaw enforcement). In fact," he concluded,"telecommunications would be almost impossible to hack."

Benefits

When carriers participate in VoIP, all call processing intelligenceand all transmission moves to the Internet, and the Public SwitchedTelephone Network (PSTN) evaporates. VoIP will undermine the veryprinciples that made them great. Telephone carriers stand tobenefit from this new technology because it preserves theirbusiness position by providing high value in the PSTN and in theunderlying private SS7 network that connects the PSTN together.

Traditional telephone carriers, as well as VoIP vendors thatparticipate in this new technology, will benefit by offering newhigh value consumer services instead of competing by cuttingprices.

Consumers will benefit from a flourish of new MultiMedia features.

Industry and governments will benefit from a rich communicationsenvironment that is secure from espionage, hacking, intrusion, andinterruption. Internet telephony is unregulated by the FCC, and thegovernment cannot figure out how to deal with this problem. Anyonecan become an Internet telephone company, and do things any waythey like, regardless of all the above issues. By moving callcontrol back into the PSTN, telecommunications will be restored asa national asset, and the U.S. federal government will once againbe able to assert oversight.
