Nixon said he sent letters Tuesday to the treasurers of eachpolitical campaign committee registered with the Missouri EthicsCommission. The letters outline the federal requirements and assertthat Nixon's office will pursue court injunctions and fines of upto $1,500 per call for violators.
"With the help of Missourians who file complaints, we'll beaggressive in enforcing the law against these anonymous, unwantedintrusions," Nixon said in a written statement.
Nixon held a St. Louis news conference about robo calls in hisofficial capacity as attorney general. His campaign spokesman, OrenShur, said separately that Nixon's gubernatorial campaign has not— and will not — use automated, prerecorded phonecalls.
"These things are obnoxious, they interrupt people's dinnersand we're not going to use them," Shur said. "Beyondthat, they're simply not as effective as having volunteers callfolks in their communities and their friends."
Nixon is not taking aim at political calls made with live humanvoices, which his campaign will continue to use, Shur said.
In the governor's race, Nixon is opposed by Republican U.S. Rep.Kenny Hulshof, whose campaign acknowledged Tuesday that it did makerobo calls during Hulshof's August primary victory over TreasurerSarah Steelman. But those calls included a disclaimer about whopaid for them, said Hulshof spokesman Scott Baker.
In recent years, Nixon has urged lawmakers to expand the state'sno-call list beyond its current residential land lines to alsoinclude cell phones, text messages, faxes and political automatedcalls. But lawmakers have failed to pass such bills.
Hulshof "would be comfortable" with banning politicalrobo calls, Baker said. He suggested Nixon was hyping his role inblocking unwanted telephone calls.
