Country Needs More Emergency Nurses - ENAN

Gombe, Aug 29, 2008 (Daily Champion/All Africa Global Media viaCOMTEX News Network) -- Emergency nurses Association of Nigeria(ENAN) has urged federal government and state governments to trainmore emergency nurses saying that their number has inadequate inNigeria hospitals.
This call was made by Mr. Ejiroghene Egbeol at the opening ceremonyof the third Annual National Scientific Delegate Conference of theAssociation held recently iin Gombe.
Egbeol cited Gombe as an example of the state that has elevenemergency nurses at the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe while five ofthem are at Gombe State Specialist hospital.
According to him, this number was grossly inadequate as many of thehospitals in the state were without such nurses, a situation whichhe said could spell doom in the health care delivery.
While stressing that every government hospital should haveemergency nurses charged participants to ensure that knowledgeacquired the conference is not hoarded but should be shared withtheir colleagues who are absent at the conference.
Also speaking during the occasion, the Gombe State Commissioner forhealth, Dr. Mohammed Isa Umar, who was represented by a Director inthe Ministry, Alhaji Isiaku Garba hinted that the state has builtand equipped six additional primary health care centres waiting forcommissioning.
He explained that the ministry was aware of the need for nurses toacquire and update their knowledge and had never blocked such achance for them, saying, Any of them was such opportunity would beallowed to pursue any professional course unhindered,"
Guest Speaker at the occasion, Mr. P.N. Ndatsu called forempowerment of the health. sector so as to enhance capacitybuilding, equipment acquisition and personnel recruitment. He addedthat government needed to be conscious of the fact that personnelneed recruitment. He added that government needed to be consciousof the fact that personnel need to be trained to handle newequipment in hospitals.
He also called for adequate funding of specialised units such asemergency through budgetary framework to enable them acquire therequisite equipment, set up a system that would encourage andfacilitate individualised patient care.
He suggested that clinical practice guidelines be made available inall emergency departments of government hospitals in addition toadvanced written standards for emergency care, especially where newequipment are to be used including the provision of computers fornursing diagnosis and care.
