Kibaki tells ICT investors to focus on rural areas

President Kibaki has challenged investors in information,communication and technological sector to focus on the rural areas.
The President said Kenyans were also expecting a substantialreduction in connectivity charges due to improved incentives andcheaper technologies now available to Information, Communicationand Technology companies.
Kibaki said the Government was motivated by the dream of creating amodern and efficient telecommunications infrastructure to transformKenya into a regional service centre.
"We have achieved substantial progress in liberalising thetelecommunications industry. What Kenyans now expect is to reap thebenefits of these achievements in terms of cheaper telephoneservices and increased access," the President said.
Speaking at the Nairobi National Museum during the officialinauguration of Celtel-Zain re-branding and the entry of Zain brandinto the market, the President noted mobile telephony should offera reliable means of communication in rural areas, where the bulk ofeconomic activities are based.
