THAILAND: DTAC and True Move may finally get 3G green light

The National Telecommunications Commission is likely to allow bothDTAC and True Move to import equipment to upgrade their networks toprovide third-generation (3G) mobile phone services when it meetson Thursday.
Approval had been held up pending more details from CAT Telecom,which controls the mobile operators' concessions, on therearrangement of frequencies to accommodate 3G.
The regulator would also consider a request by market leaderAdvanced Info Service to import more equipment to install anadditional 100 more base stations, said NTC secretary-generalSuranant Wongwittayakamchorn.
He said that the NTC board had earlier endorsed CAT's request torearrange its frequencies in compliance with Article 80 of theTelecom Business Law.
He said that the rearrangement of the frequencies would enable CATto utilise them to earn more money. CAT also assured the regulatorthat the changes would not breach its concession contracts with thetwo operators.
