Police Say Man Refused to Drop Hunting Knife

The RCMP have released more details on what happened in the Mayfairshooting on Wednesday. Police say it began just after 9:45 a.m. in Spiritwood when RCMPtried to stop a man driving erratically after he rammed the policevehicle. The pursuit ended just north of Mayfair.
 
Police say the man got out of the vehicle holding a large huntingknife and refused to drop it as the police called for hissurrender.
 
RCMP call it a "high risk, stressful incident in whichofficers did everything possible to ensure the safety of the publicand the arrest of the armed suspect." They say the use offirearms was necessary.
 
A 58-year-old man from Saskatoon suffered gunshot wounds, and wastaken to North Battleford Hospital . He was later transferred toRoyal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
 
A Prince Albert Police Service investigator has been appointed asindependent observer, which is standard when police are involved ina shooting.
