Sheet Enables to Light Mobile Phone Keys w/ Fewer LEDs

Nippon Denshi Light Co Ltd, an affiliate of NEC Electronics Inc,commercialized and released its "Light Guide Sheet,"which is surface-treated and effectively lights the entry key areasof mobile phones, in July 2008.
A light guide pattern was screen-printed on a thin optical film of0.1 to 0.2mm in thickness, based on the result of opticalsimulations. The light emitted from LEDs laid out on edges of thesheet will be diffused and uniformly light up the entry keys. Thiswill be effective for reduction of the number of LEDs to bemounted.
The combination of this light guide sheet and two LEDs achievesuniform lighting and luminance equivalent to or higher than tenLEDs without a light guide sheet, Nippon Denshi Light said.
The light guide sheet comes in two types manufactured in differentmethods. One is a "top light type" made by screenprinting and the other is a "side light type" made by aspecial cutting process.
The top light type has edge-light LEDs mounted on edges of thelight guide sheet. The light enters from the edges of the lightguide film. Light is emitted on the top surface by reflection ofthe light-guide pattern, which is printed with a special reflectingmaterial on the bottom surface.
The side light type uses a light guide sheet that has specialnotches based on optical simulations. It is mounted with edge-lightLEDs on the edges. The light is emitted by reflecting thehalf-cylinder light emission pattern on sides of the notches. The company also commercialized LED-implemented substrate"light guide module," which was manufactured by printinga similar light guide pattern on the surface of a 2mm acrylicboard. It is dimensioned 150 x 50mm. It is intended for use inmonochrome LC backlight modules of vehicle-mounted devices.
