DuPont adding nylon capacity in Guangdong

DuPont Co. plans to expand its SouthChina nylon compounding capacity by 40,000 metric tons, as thecompany said demand continues to be strong in China's domesticautomobile market.

Wilmington, Deleware-based DuPont plans to add a30,000-metric-ton-per-year extrusion line for nylon 6/6 and a10,000-metric-ton line for its Zytel HTN polyamide resin, withproduction targeted for mid-2009 at the company's plant inShenzhen, Guangdong province, said Philippe Hanck, sales andmarketing director for DuPont's engineering polymers unit forGreater China, India and ASEAN countries.

DuPont declined to reveal total capacity at the plant, but Hancksaid it's part of a two-year period of heavy investment for thecompany in Asia, including adding compounding capacity for Zytel atits Ulsan, South Korea, plant last, putting in capacity forspecialty compounding in Shenzhen last year, and bringing aSingapore factory for the company's Vespel resins on stream thismonth.

Hanck spoke during an April 17 interview at the Chinaplas show,held April 17-20 in Shanghai.
China's automotive market remains a key driver of growth, andDuPont has seen 12 months of “exceptional” growth inAsia, Hanck said.

“Last year, in Asia, the first quarter of 2007 was verypoor,” he said. “It had started in last quarter of2006. After that we had exceptional growth and the first quarter ofthis year has been exceptional. We have a period of 12 months ofexceptional growth.”
