Should students be allowed to have cell phones? After the schoolshootings of recent years, the National School Safety and SecurityServices have received several questions such as that one.
Many students in the Bibb County school system do not agree withthe cell phone policies that have been set by the Board ofEducation. According to the Bibb County school system's code ofconduct, cellular phones are contraband items and will beconfiscated and turned over to campus police. Students can retrievetheir phones at the campus police office by paying a $25 fee.
Some students wonder why they aren't allowed to carry their cellphones if they are not being used during instructional time.
"I think as long as cell phones don't interfere with teaching, theyshould be acceptable in the classroom," said Michelle Thublin, ajunior at Tattnall Square Academy.
Because of parental concerns, the code of conduct says students areallowed to possess cell phones if they are programmable and do nothave key pads, cameras or text messaging capabilities. Students whodrive also are allowed to keep cellular phones in their vehicles.Some students do not agree with this rule.
"I don't even think they make cellular phones without keypadsanymore, and keeping our phones inside of our vehicles will notbenefit us in the event that an emergency happens while we areinside of the school," said JaQuandria Floyd, a senior a NortheastHigh School.
While some students disagree with the cell phones policies, othersaren't really bothered by it.
"I did like to be able to call my mom and not have to buy a newprogrammable cell phone, but it's OK now that I'm driving because Ican keep it in my car," said Alex Huckaby, a junior at WestsideHigh School.
