China telecom restructuring to be completed in 6 months

China will complete the restructuring of itstelecommunications industry in around six months, said Xi Guohua,the vice-minister of industry and informatization.
Speaking at a press conference, Xi said that while no specifictimetable is yet available, China will issue third-generationmobile telephony licenses once the restructuring process has beencompleted. He said that all three major 3G standards - WCDMA, CDMA 2000 andChina's home-grown TD-SCDMA - will be treated 'fairly and equally'when it comes to issuing the licenses.
China is in the process of reshuffling the assets of six of itstelecom firms with the aim of improving competitiveness in thesector.
In the restructuring process, China Mobile (nyse: CHL - news - people ) will acquire the smaller China Tietong Communications and ChinaTelecom will take over China Unicom (nyse: CHU - news - people )'s CDMA mobile network, while Unicom's GSM mobile network will bemerged into China Netcom.
Each of the three restructured entities will be able to offer bothfixed-line and mobile services, a change from the current system ofseparate mobile and fixed-line operators.
