MLB All-Star Home Run Derby Live Thread

[2008-7-17]

Tag : All Thread Rod

While I still long for the days of Mickey and Willie at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field , I still do enjoy the modern day home run derby in spite of theover-Bermanization.

I know one thing and it's that I remember many more moments fromthe long ball fests than I do the actual All-Star Games over thelast 10 years.

Ryan Howard vs David Wright was fairly memorably in 2006, BobbyAbreu's 24 first round homers in '05 remains stunning and LanceBerkman's 493' bomb at his own park in 2003 was something tobehold.

Then, of course, there's the juiced years which can be vieweddifferently now, but they weren't short on entertainment. MarkMcGwire's mammoth shots at Fenway Park in '99 still resonate, but Ifind it fitting Ken Griffey Jr. was the winner, and a multiplewinner. It's too bad Griffey isn't a part of tonight's festivities, but then he'd probably find someway to get himself injured. Buthe's got a more reasonable excuse than the man that should behosting tonight's derby: Alex Rodriguez.

No A-Rod makes for a rather bland field tonight at Yankee Stadium,a field full of drooling left handed bats. We won't be short onballs leaving the field, that's for sure.

What I find interesting is that Ryan Braun's agent will be feedinghim tonight. If he's any sort of agent, which judging by Braun'slatest deal, he is, he'll have Braun going far in this competition. But other than the Brewer, it's going to be a lefty's night. Thatporch is way too short in right field.

I've got Chase Utley over Josh Hamilton in the finals. (poll addedbelow)
