It could be the end of the line for the region's loneliest phonebox after only ONE call was made from it in a year.
The Woodford Road kiosk, in Poynton, is set for demolition afterreceiving a single solitary visitor in the last 12 months. Itreflects a national decline in public telephone use.
Phone company BT wants to stem losses on its most neglected boxes,so it is ringing in the changes.
Poynton's box may be lonely, but it is sadly not alone.
The end of the Woodford Road box is a sign of the times, as manyfree standing kiosks have been pushed out by mobile phones and theinternet.
In Poynton alone, six booths are earmarked for removal after BT'slatest consultation with Macclesfield council.
A BT spokeswoman revealed almost 60 per cent of phone boxesthroughout the country are unprofitable.
In Poynton, an axe hovers over two boxes on Dickens Lane, and oneeach on Anson Road, London Road South, Middlewood Road and WoodfordRoad, which will all be demolished unless the council persuades BTto keep them.
Poynton parish council has written to the borough authority, urgingthem to keep the Dickens Lane and Anson Road phone boxes, which areused significantly more than the other four.
