As television content migrates to an increasing number of digital platforms, theneed for content protection becomes paramount. The technology usedto ensure that copyright holders get fairly compensated for theirinvestment is racing to keep up. It's an issue that will only getmore important as high-value content continues to make its way ontothe Web.

Two major types of cross-platform content protection technologycurrently do the work. Conditional access , or scrambling technology, blocks unauthorized viewers fromwatching premium content. Cable and satellite operators use this asthe foundation of their pay-TV businesses.

Separately, copy protection helps prevent piracy by either makingit impossible to duplicate a piece of content, or by inserting awatermark or other unique identifier, such as a digitalfingerprint, that allows copyright holders to track down pirates. It has long been used in both television broadcasts and home video. Vendors see two major trends in current protection types: anincreasing move to software-based systems; and a desire bycustomers for multi-platform solutions that can protect contentanywhere, whether it is delivered to a TV, PC or mobile handset. Some say increased video on the Web, where users can easily uploadand illegally distribute premium content, is changing the nature oftheir business. The shift to digital delivery is part of the reason Macrovision, the undisputed leader in analog copy protection, decided to acquirenavigation giant Gemstar-TV Guide for $2.8 billion. The SantaClara, Calif.-based company's technology, which inserts informationinto the vertical blanking interval (VBI) of an analog TV signalthat disrupts the video synch, is ubiquitous among analog TV setsand set-tops.
