SEBASTOPOL – If you can’t keep both hands on the wheelwhile driving come July 1 it will cost you if you get caughtholding a cell phone in one or the other. The California Highway Patrol is reminding drivers that the newlaw, passed two years ago by the legislature and signed by GovernorArnold Schwarzenegger prohibits anyone from using a hand-held cellphone while driving in public roads in California.
Truckers and others holding a Class A or Class B driver’slicense, however, will be able to use a "push-to-talk"device through 2010 at which time the CHP says everyone will behands-free.
A second law prohibits those under 18 from using any type of cellphone while driving because, according to CHP Commissioner JoeFarrow, "new, inexperienced drivers need to focus their fullattention on operating a vehicle and not be distracted by phonecalls."
"These new hands-free laws illustrate the state’songoing effort to promoting responsible driving and commitment tokeeping our roadways as safe as possible," said Dale Bonner, secretary of the California’s Business, Transportation andHousing Agency.
Violations carry a first time charge of $20 and $50 for subsequentoffenses, which can be doubled or tripled depending upon courtcosts and other fees that might be applied. CHP figures show that last year, 2007, nearly 1,100 crashes wereblamed on drivers using handheld cell phones. Some 447 people wereinjured in these accidents. Already motorists anticipating the new law, and wanting to avoidhefty fines as driving becomes ever more expensive, have beenflocking to electronic stores to get either Bluetooth wirelessdevices or wired alternatives.
