Stupid tax on cell phone by drivers is good

Governments have often sought to increase revenues and perhaps modify citizens’ behaviors through the imposition of “vice” taxes on tobacco, alcohol and gambling. Congratulations to our Garden State neighbors who have taken this logic one step further with what amounts to a “stupid” tax; a stiff fine for driving under the influence of a cell phone.
Delaware roads are full of drivers diverted from the important task of driving by some stupid urge to dial a phone and chat. What a great opportunity for the state to supplement its revenues and perhaps avoid its annual budget crisis. After just a short time on the books in New Jersey the “stupid” tax has generated millions of dollars in revenues.
This seems like too good an opportunity for Delaware good to pass up. Of course, even with a $150 to $200 fine it may take a while to rid the state of the cell phone menace. But the revenues could certainly help address some of Delaware’ serious problems, like children at risk.
When the cell phone threat is gone will the revenues dry up? Not to worry; by then we’ll have seen the light and moved to codify the application of makeup, eating breakfast and reading the newspaper as more behind-the-wheel stupidity.
