A tackle exchange July 31 in the Scheels parking lot in Waite Parkwill help them make the switch.
Volunteers will collect lead-based fishing gear in exchange for oneof the nontoxic tackle options such as tungsten, tin and bismuthproducts.
People can bring in their lead fishing gear and we will give themup to a dozen jigs in exchange, program manager Amanda Baribeausaid. The jigs will be offered while supplies last.
Last year, about 1,000 pounds of lead were collected statewideduring similar exchanges. More than 150 pounds have been collectedthis year.
The program is part of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency andthe Minnesota Department of Natural Resources attempt to replacethe lead in tackle boxes with safer, more environmentally soundfishing gear.
Anglers, much like other outdoors enthusiasts, have been dealingwith lead for years because its a cheap material for creatingweights, jigs, shot and bullets.
But lead is toxic and has adverse effects on the nervous andreproductive systems of humans, fish and other wildlife.
Lead has been the lethal ingredient in many bird deaths, primarilyaffecting eagles and loons, according to the MPCA.
Loons, for example, often scoop up pebbles from the bottom of lakesand rivers to help grind their food. Lost tackle weights can easilybe ingested, leading to lead poisoning.
Lead poisoning accounted for 12 percent to 50 percent of deaths inadult loons with known causes of death nationwide, a studyconducted by the MPCA concluded.
Anglers might be affected as well.
Fishermen sometimes dont think anything of it and just bite downon tackle like split shot. ... Its crazy because they might haveput lead in their mouths, said Rob Kavanaugh, co-owner of Dr.Drop, an Eagan-based tackle supplier that specializes in tungstensinkers.
Split-shot sinkers are common sliding and gliding weights thatrequire pliers or sometimes a fishermans jaw muscles to compressthe weight around the fishing line.
