SMP Data sold to fiber cable manufacturer

Formerly known as Superior Modular Products, SMP DataCommunications manufactures more than 2,000 products, and hasdeveloped numerous patented technologies since its founding in1990, including a low crosstalk electrical connector system thatthe company claims “revolutionized” the high-speedconnector industry and remains the basis for today’s higherfrequency connectivity. Its solutions include Category 5e and 6Aproducts, as well as high-density fiberoptic enclosures.
The company is located in Swannanoa, NC, and employs nearly 120.General manager Bill Reynolds will remain in a leadership role,serving as president of the new OCC subsidiary and as senior vicepresident of OCC.
Says OCC’s Wilkin, “Our long-term strategy includesexpanding our product offerings to provide our customers with morecomplete cabling and connectivity solutions. SMP DataCommunications is an internationally respected and industry-leadinginnovator in copper and fiberoptic connectivity products. OpticalCable now has the fiber\optic and copper connectivity productsnecessary for us to offer an integrated suite of high-qualitycabling and connectivity solutions.”
Optical Cable Corp., with headquarters in Roanoke, VA, producesfiberoptic communications cables designed primarily for theenterprise market. Founded in 1983, it employs approximately 200.Wilkin says both the Optical Cable and SMP Data Communicationsproduct lines will soon be available through a“realigned” outside sales team. He adds, “to easethe transition for our customers, our phone lines, product numbers,and inside sales representatives at both companies will remain thesame for now.”
Michael Newman, vice president of international sales for OCC, willnow be responsible for international sales for bothcompanies’ products. SMP Data Communications and OCC salesand marketing professionals will share additional marketing andsales operations responsibilities.
In addition to his current roles at OCC, Wilkin will serve aschairman and CEO of SMP Data Communications. Tracy Smith,OCC’s chief financial officer, will serve in the samecapacity with SMP Data Communications.
