It is essentially a PC, but it has borrowed heavily fromcellphones. In fact, it's like a large version of the LG Rumourcellphone, which has a screen that slides sideways to reveal acomplete QWERTY keyboard, intended for people who like to send textmessages. The keyboard on the HTC Shift is larger than the Rumour'skeyboard, but like cellphones that can act as modems, the HTC usesa SIM card to connect to Rogers' high-speed HSPA data stream.Because it's on the GSM network, the HTC Shift can connect to theInternet in about 200 countries.

Another thing borrowed from cellphones is a variant mobileoperating system called SnapVUE, which alternates with Vista bypressing a button on the side of the screen — the idea beingthat you can put Vista to sleep while running the far lesspower-hungry SnapVUE, and use its PDA-like features such as acalendar, clock, weather forecast, push e-mail, your contact listand access to the short-message service.

HTC promises SnapVUE will run about two days in stand-by time withpush e-mail enabled. One drawback is that if you get an e-mail withan important attachment, you will have to fire up Vista to open it,because SnapVUE isn't up to that job.

From one perspective, the HTC Shift is like a cellphone with a fullWindows operating system but which does not make phone calls; fromanother, it's a laptop that connects to the Internet like a 3Gcellphone but offers a 7-inch screen (on the diagonal). All this ismaking the distinction between handheld and sub-notebook seriouslyblurred.

The HTC Shift is not, however, a laptop replacement in the way thatsome laptops are called desktop replacements. It runs on an IntelA110 processor, running at a modest 800 MHz, which Intel has put atthe core of its own ultra-mobile platform. It offers 1 gigabyte ofRAM, with a 40 GB hard disk (running at a sedate 4,200 rpm). It'sno hare, but it isn't much of a tortoise either — it runs ata speed we find tolerable when surfing the Net on a 3G cellphone.
