Omnitron Systems Technology , a provider of Carrier Ethernet demarcation devices and mediaconverters, today announced the availability of the new iConverter ® xFF fiber-to-fiber media converter. The iConverter xFF is a protocol-transparent and data-rate independent mediaconverter designed to simplify fiber-to-fiber conversion forEthernet and TDM networks by providing conversion between differentwavelengths, multimode and single-mode, dual and single-fiber.
As the demand for network bandwidth and new services grows, ServiceProviders and Enterprise network managers are compelled to expandbandwidth of existing fiber infrastructure and restructure theirnetworks for use with new technologies while preserving theirinvestment in existing equipment. A popular way to increase thebandwidth to existing fiber optic lines is by using WavelengthDivision Multiplexing (WDM). WDM technology allows independent andsimultaneous data streams to be transmitted using differentwavelengths, or colors of light, over a single fiber optic line.These wavelengths are combined (multiplexed) on the source end andseparated (de-multiplexed via color filters) at the destinationend. The iConverter xFF provides the translation between different wavelengths,enabling new and existing network equipment to utilize the WDMinfrastructure and eliminating the need to install additional fiberlines.
In a simple variation of the WDM technology, the xFF is capable ofcreating two, bi-directional single fiber lines from a traditionaldual fiber. This doubles the data capacity; serving two customersin the place of one or providing line protection redundancy forcritical application where only unprotected service was available.
The iConverter xFF uses Small Form Pluggable (SFP) fiber optic transceivers thatprovide amplification and easy conversion between differentwavelengths and fiber types. The xFF ’ s SFPs support data rates of 1Mbps to 1.25Gbps covering the T1/E1,T3/E3, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, OC-3 and OC-12SONET/SDH protocols. The xFF can extend fiber distances up to 140km on single-mode or 5km onmultimode fiber, and CWDM SFPs extend distances up to 150km. Thereis no manual configuration required with the plug-and-playiConverter xFF. Simply connect the fiber cables to the appropriateinterface and the installation is complete.
The iConverter xFF is part of the iConverter portfolio that consists of modular media converters and chassisfamily that provide a variety of configurations for high-densityand stand-alone applications. iConverter s can be used in managed or unmanaged networks. The iConverter converter modules including the xFF can be managed by installing aNetwork Management Module in the same chassis, and the SNMPmanagement can be accessed via Omnitron ’ s NetOutlook ® network management software, third-party SNMP software, or Telnet.
