Alarm clock inside bag creates panic at Piramid

The tick..tick sound of an alarm clock inside an NDA cadetsluggage bag created major panic at the Piramid Mega Store at SGSMall in Pune Camp on Sunday afternoon.
Four NDA cadets kept their bags at the luggage counter in PiramidMega Store in Camp at 2 pm. After shopping for a while, the cadetswent for lunch to a nearby restaurant.
At 3.15 pm, an alarm clock inside the luggage bag of one of thecadets started buzzing. The Piramid employee at the luggage counterthought that bag contained bomb. He called Hrishikesh Rai, securityin-charge of Piramid Mega store. Rai quickly lifted the bag fromthe counter and ran outside to deposit it and informed the police.They made repeated announcements over the public announcementsystem to check if these bags belonged to any of the customers, butyielded no response. So, Rai informed the customers about thesuspicious bag and requested them to leave the store. About 1,000customers at the store left the premises as per the instructions ofthe Piramid staff.
A team of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) reached the spotaround 4 pm with all its advanced machinery for detectingexplosives. The dog squad was pressed into action. Traffic wasdiverted at the chowk near in front of Dorabjee Mall.
Meanwhile, a huge crowd gathered near the store. Just wheneverybody watched with bated breath, the NDA cadets returned tocollect their bags.
When the police inquired about the ticking sound coming from thebag, the cadets clarified that it was a clock and not a bomb. Soonthe cadets opened the bag and showed the clock to the police,sparking peals of laughter all around. The police then turned theirattention on controlling the mob and traffic.
A team of Bund Garden police took the NDA cadets to Council Hallpolice chowky. The police let them free after recording theirstatements. The cadets claimed that they had informed the Piramidstaff while moving out for lunch.
When contacted, security in charge Rai said that cadets had notinformed any of their staff. The cadets kept the luggage, took thetoken and then were not seen. We made repeated announcements aboutthe bags. But they did not come to collect their belongings. WithJaipur blasts fresh in mind, we did not want to take any chance andcalled in the police, he said.
