Charter Suspends Plan To Sell Customer Data to Advertisers

Charter Communications, the big cable company, said Tuesday that itis suspending its plan to sell data about its customers’ Web surfing to anadvertising company.
Charter was going to work with a firm called NebuAd, which hasarrangements with several smaller Internet providers. The premiseis that since your Internet service provider can identify that youare reading about buying a gas grill, it can make sure you see adsfrom Weber as you surf other sites.
NebuAd argues that this can all be done protecting the anonymity of users.Privacy advocates, not surprisingly, disagree.
