Relay for Life sets recording breaking goal

The fight for a cure for cancer marched, walked and jogged around Bulldog Stadium in record-breaking style.

The annual Mid and South County Relay for Life, held Friday, welcomed the most people to ever participate in the fundraising event. More than 1,100 men, women and children -- including 185 local cancer survivors- gathered to 'celebrate, remember and
"Each team was encouraged to set up and decorate with our theme this year, 'Relay Super heroes'," Kara Baker, event organizer, said. "Our slogan is 'Celebrate, Remember, Fight back' and we have a record number of teams this year -- 63."

Those teams of co-workers, family and friends of cancer patients, survivors and victims have worked in the past few months to raise more than $182,000. Baker, the East Texas Region Relay for Life chairperson, set a goal to have $220,000 before the night's end.
