Humanscale, a manufacturer of high-performance ergonomic work toolsfor the office environment, is introducing Switch Mouse, designedto prevent musculoskeletal discomfort and injury.
According to the company, traditional mouse designs can promoteawkward hand and wrist positions and cause discomfort ormusculoskeletal disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. TheCornell University Human Factors and Ergonomics Research Groupadvises computer users to select a mouse that fits the shape of theentire hand and, according to research by Cornell, the CanadianCentre for Occupational Health & Safety, and other sources, alarge mouse encourages the user to employ larger arm muscles ratherthan small wrist muscles, which are more likely to developmusculoskeletal disorders.
The optical Switch Mouse, developed by the Humanscale DesignStudio, reportedly features ergonomic design innovations, includinga V-shaped base, which enables users to mouse at a natural 45degangle to minimise wrist pronation, and a navigation dish thatreduces muscle activity while allowing users to scroll in fourdirections. Users can also adjust the length of the mouse for acustom, comfortable fit.
In addition, the mouse features a symmetrical shape for left- orright-handed use, a built-in palm support to prevent contact stressat the wrist and programmable buttons.
The Switch Mouse is priced at USD120.
