PAD: Senate speaker has made no approach; students will rally
BANGKOK, Sept 6 (TNA) -- The anti-government People's Alliance forDemocracy (PAD) said that Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondej had notyet discussed with the group on finding ways to resolve politicalturbulence in Thailand while students from over 80 institutionsplan to hold a major rally Saturday evening to pressure thegovernment to resign.
Retired Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang, a core leader of the PAD, saidhis group would not negotiate with anybody unless Prime MinisterSamak Sundaravej and his coalition government resign first.
Currently, several organisations and educational institutions arealso moving to pressure the coalition government to resign,Maj-Gen. Chamlong said.

Mr. Prasopsuk on Friday began talks with army chief Gen. AnupongPaochinda to explore ways to end the current political turbulencewhich has impacted Thailand for months.
The Senate speaker's move to a peacemaking role came with hisappointment at a meeting with House Speaker Chai Chidchob andDemocrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva early Friday vesting himwith the authority to serve as peace mediator to end the politicalturmoil which has crippled the national economy and left the nationpolitically divided.
The House of Representatives will meet Monday to be briefed on thelatest developments.
The cabinet is scheduled to meet in the northeastern province ofUdon Thani next week. However, Gen. Chamlong said the Bangkok-basedPAD leaders could not order the coalition's members in the provincenot to demonstrate against the government as the local group arenot subordinates.

If any violence occurs there, the PAD in Bangkok has nothing to dowith it, Maj. Gen. Chamlong warned.
Meanwhile, students from more than 80 institutions nationwide willrally Saturday evening at the Makkawan Bridge where the PAD hasbeen demonstrating demanding for the ouster of the government sinceMay 25.

It is believed that the students will announce a boycott and stopattending classes in an attempt to demand that
the embattled prime minister leave the post unconditionally. (TNA)
