The Confederate flag that flutters 30 feetabove one of this city's busiest streets still draws a mix of headshakes and shrugs from South Carolina residents.
Some are upset the banner was removed from atop the Statehouse domeeight years ago. Some say they like it in its current spot beside amemorial to Confederate soldiers. And some echo a recent call bythe NAACP for the banner to be removed from state propertyaltogether.
The NAACP at its national convention this week renewed its call foran economic boycott of South Carolina. Since 1999, the civil rightsorganization has encouraged family reunions, sporting events andentertainers to stay away, and officials say their new plan entailsasking actors and movie studios to also shun the state.
"We are a patient organization. We've been working for 100 yearsdoing this. And as is always the case, outside pressure is the onlyway South Carolina ever gets anything accomplished," said LonnieRandolph, president of the South Carolina chapter of the NAACP.
But there appears to be little popular support for another pushlike the one in 2000 that brought the flag down from the dome.
Some lawmakers who engineered the move to the current spot saythey're satisfied. Some say the banner, passed by 28,000 driverseach day, has faded into the background. And even those who aren'tpleased say there's neither the political will nor the publicoutcry to make another switch.
