The boys tried a variety of bait including corn, hotdogs and worms."The fish seem to prefer the hotdogs and worms better,"said Cub Master Al Furlow. All fish caught were returned to the water after posing for a photoopportunity.

"This was our first year for the fishing derby," saidDebbie Huprich. "It's a wonderful opportunity for all ourfamilies to gather to watch their children learn to fish."

Many of the boys, like Robert, have never fished before. For thosewho did not have fishing poles, the Cub Scout Pack arranged toborrow 25 fishing poles from the Department of Natural Resources inAnnapolis . The poles came complete with reels, hooks, lines, sinkers and bobbers.

For every Scout and sibling who participated in Sunday's fishingderby, each received a goodie bag filled with bobbers, sinkers, apackage of hooks, a bag of worms and a fishing magazine, allprovided by All Tackle in Annapolis and the pack. Lake Waterford is a 12 acre lake stocked with blue gills, large andsmall mouth bass, sunnies and trout.

After scouting out areas around the lake, the boys, with theassistance of the parents and den leaders, baited their hooks andwatched as they cast their first lines. "Waiting is thehardest part," said Austin Choat. While Austin didn't catch afish, he snagged a large snapping turtle. In addition to Robert's first catch, Tiger Cub Ruben Canty caughthis first fish, a 7-inch blue gill.
