GE Digital Energy announces theMultilin HardFiber System which eliminates the need for thousandsof copper wires in a substation and replaces them with a few fiberoptic cables.

By eliminating the need to install and maintainthousands of copper wires, used for signaling and monitoring inelectrical substations, utilities can save up to 50% of protectionand control installation and maintenance costs, while at the sametime increasing worker safety and power system reliability.

The HardFiber System, based on IEC 61850, the internationalstandard for substation communications, is made up of four keyelements: the HardFiber Brick, the HardFiber Cross Connect Panel, the rugged HardFiber Outdoor Fiber Cables, and the Universal RelayIEC 61850 Process Card.

The system's single, pre-terminated fiberoptic connections drastically reduce the multitude of copper wiresthat need to be pulled, spliced and terminated.

It provides anidentical interface to all primary system equipment, eliminatingcustom designs. Its standardized components reduce chances forerror and minimize costly and labor intensive testing andtroubleshooting.

"The Multilin HardFiber System is a breakthrough in theinstallation and ownership of protection and control systems," saidClaudio Cargnelli, Global Marketing Manager, GE Digital Energy. "Itdirectly addresses the challenges utilities face by deliveringsignificant installation and maintenance cost savings and improvingsystem security, reliability and safety." "Customers who have previewed the HardFiber System are impressed byits ruggedness and simplicity and have already identified how itwill save them time and money," stated Cargnelli.
