GE Digital Energy announces the Multilin HardFiber System whicheliminates the need for thousands of copper wires in a substationand replaces them with a few fiber optic cables. By eliminating theneed to install and maintain thousands of copper wires, used forsignaling and monitoring in electrical substations, utilities cansave up to 50% of protection and control installation andmaintenance costs, while at the same time increasing worker safetyand power system reliability.

The HardFiber System, based on IEC 61850, the internationalstandard for substation communications, is made up of four keyelements: the HardFiber Brick, the HardFiber Cross Connect Panel, the rugged HardFiber Outdoor Fiber Cables, and the Universal RelayIEC 61850 Process Card. The system's single, pre-terminated fiberoptic connections drastically reduce the multitude of copper wiresthat need to be pulled, spliced and terminated. It provides anidentical interface to all primary system equipment, eliminatingcustom designs. Its standardized components reduce chances forerror and minimize costly and labor intensive testing andtroubleshooting.

"The Multilin HardFiber System is a breakthrough in theinstallation and ownership of protection and control systems," saidClaudio Cargnelli, Global Marketing Manager, GE Digital Energy. "Itdirectly addresses the challenges utilities face by deliveringsignificant installation and maintenance cost savings and improvingsystem security, reliability and safety."

"Customers who have previewed the HardFiber System are impressed byits ruggedness and simplicity and have already identified how itwill save them time and money," stated Cargnelli.
