What will replace Virginia's aging breath alcohol test device

[2008-7-28]

Tag : Alcohol Breath Detector

Virginia signed a contract to purchaseIntoximeter's EC/IR II to replace its fleet of 10 to 12 year oldbreath testers. Consistent with the Regulations for Breath AlcoholTesting the device is not listed as an approved breath test device.

Alka Lohmann is the chief of Virginia's unaccredited breath alcoholsection. At the May 5, 2008 Scientific Advisory Committee meeting,Ms. Lohmann gave a status report on the EC/IR II. She reported thatout of 50 states this tester is used in only four states besidesVirginia: West Virginia, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Tennessee.Ms. Lohmann did not indicate why only 10% of the states used theEC/IR II. She stated that the new tester offered enhancedcommunication capabilities, increased trouble shooting form the laband the ability to use a dry gas.

Ms. Lohmann was asked about the types of reports that can berequested related to the device. She stated that the same reportspresently available will be available for the new machine.

One of the basic principles of analytical chemistry is the eachanalysis such be corroborated by an independent, alternativemethod. Agreement between the two different analytical methodsinsures the reliability of the results.

The name EC/IR II implies that the machine will measure thesubject's alcohol concentration in two methods: EC meanselectrochemical or fuel cell while IR means infrared. By thismethod, the device guarantees the reliability of its resultsthrough using different tests. This internal corroboration wouldgive the EC/IR II a distinct reliability advantage over devicesutilizing only one technology.
