Management half the battle against worms

[2008-7-28]

Tag : abamectin pour-on solution

Combine good stock management practices with an effective pour-ondrench for best results and successful parasite management incattle, says Agpro, announcing the launch of its new productOptamectin.

Quarantine drench new stock arriving on your property. Worms willalways be present on your farm and the aim is to maintain a largelydrench-susceptible population rather than a resistant one.

When new stock arrive, drench, then hold them in a non-pastureyard area with feed and water for 24 hours. Don't put them onclean pasture, instead put them on areas likely to havesusceptible larvae.

Weigh a sample of the stock so animals receive the optimal drenchdose.

Grazing management protects vulnerable stock, says Agpro.

Use stock movement, grazing history, pasture species, weather andintegrated stock grazing (sheep and cattle) to minimise larvalchallenge. For example, use older cattle to help clean up larvae onpasture, allowing fresh pasture to grow for lambs, hoggets andcalves.

Rotate different stock classes around paddocks. Limit intake ofparasites in young stock by providing calves with low parasitestatus feeds such as crops or new grass.
