BUDAPEST. JULY 23. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - In addition to existing hydro power plants totaling more than 50 MW, Hungarian waterways holds the potential for a further 40 MW of hydro power capacity at some 15-18 separate locations, the daily Vilaggazdasag reported on Wednesday. Currently, there are some 35 hydro power generators in Hungary - by far the largest of which are the state-owned Kiskore and Tiszalok units on the Tisza river in eastern Hungary, with respective capacity of 28 MW and 12.6 MW.
The most recently completed hydro power unit was built by Kenyeri Vizeromu on western Hungary's Raba river in a HUF 2.1 bln investment, with capacity of 1.6 MW. Planned projects include a 2 MW facility in southeast Hungary's Bekesszentandras on the Koros river, which domestic investor Hydro Power Consulting expects to build in a HUF 2.5 bln investment, according to the daily. In order to fully utilize Hungarian rivers' hydro power potential, the government needs to remove a current ban on building new dams on small rivers, according to experts cited by the daily. The ban - which only allows the installation of power generation equipment on existing dams - should also be reviewed in order to increase possibilities for irrigation and shipping, the daily adds.
