Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.) Inc. announced the NR6028 series of 6 x 6mm x 2.8mm (max) wire-woundpower inductors for dc-dc converter choke coil applications inLCD/plasma TVs and other flat panel displays (FPDs). The 13 modelsin the NR6028 series are said to offer an excellent selection oflow dc resistance (0.013 - 0.6Ω), high inductance (0.9 -100µH), high current ratings (0.62 - 6.6A) and improvedperformance versus previous company models. The NR6028-100M device, for example, provides 36% higher rated current at 10µHinductance.
The NR6028 series broadens the company’s line of 6 x 6 mmwire-wound power inductors which now includes an even greaterselection of maximum height dimensions offering what is describedas unprecedented design flexibility for a wide range of marketneeds. These parts include: 1.2mm (NR6012 series); 2.0mm (NR6020series); 2.8mm (NR6028 series) and 4.5mm (NR6045 series) heightdevices.
Compared to earlier models, the latest FPDs include many more ICchips in the I/O, image processing and information processingcircuits. Each IC chip typically includes its own power supplycircuit to more efficiently use power and to lower overallconsumption as much as possible. Such ICs are said to requirecostly multi-layer boards that have grown larger due to more powersupply circuits, a factor that is said to have also driven up FPDprices. It is claimed that this has resulted in higher demand forchoke coils (the main component in dc-dc converters) with highercurrent capacity, lower dc resistance (R(DC)) and smaller physicalsize.
Taiyo Yuden claims that boosting current capability requiresincreasing the size of the core and thickening the windings insidethe inductor, both of which make reducing device size verydifficult. The company states that it responded to this challengeby improving the round drum/sleeve core technology used byconventional inductor designs. What is described as a uniquesleeveless, square-core winding was developed for use by NR seriesinductors that successfully eliminated all wasted space andthickened the lead wire inside the inductor to achieve the lowestpossible dc resistance.
Units are sample priced at $0.20 each with a delivery of 2 weeksARO.
