CORCOM High-Current AC Power Line Filters Meet Demands of Wind Power

CORCOM filters are extremely well suited to such wind powerapplications as the inverter-to-grid interface, the controlelectronics for the inverter, and other system elements critical tothe operation of the station, says Eric Freid, director,Alternative Energy at Tyco Electronics. Wind power applicationsrequire the high-insertion-loss performance, compact size, andrugged reliability that CORCOM filters are known for.

For high-current inverter applications, the range of filters allowsa wide choice for designers to balance the needs of performance,size, and costs. Besides several series of general-purpose filters,the line also includes the ADT series offering very high insertionloss for applications requiring premium performance and the CFNseries accommodating the highest current levels to 400 A.

For control applications, CORCOM filters prevent locally generatednoise from getting onto the grid and can also keep noise on thegrid from interfering with the control electronics. Filters toisolate the electronics from the power-generation section includethe B series, which offers very high attenuation in the range from10 KHz to 30 MHz, and the FCD series, which provides highattenuation of conducted interference at low- and high-frequencyranges to better protect programmable logic controllers. Both the Band FCD series are available with current rating in the 16 to 30 Arange required for control applications.

CORCOM filters meet the stringent performance requirements forconducted noise, aid in immunity/susceptibility compliance, andoffer a high insertion loss over a wide frequency range from 10 kHzto 30 MHz. Typically, filters for wind power applications are deltawound, although wye configurations are also available.
