JOINING the competitive market of standalone iPod speaker systemsis the Sonic Impact T24, which takes on similar offerings fromrivals like Bose, Altec Lansing and Creative Technology.

The T24 works with the third, fourth and fifth generation iPods,iPod nano and iPod mini.

The all-in-one speaker system has the usual functions: You cancharge your iPod on it and even send your videos on newer iPods toa TV screen.

It is simple to operate. Just drop or slide in your iPod in theslot connector and press play on the remote control or the iPod.

I tested the T24 using an iPod nano loaned from Apple, and alsoconnected my notebook to the T24 via its auxiliary input to testthe sound quality of the speakers.

The T24 has a minor design flaw - no power and volume indicatorlights. So you cannot tell if the system is switched on, or howloud the volume has been set.

The audio quality is decent and has ample presence, but is notquite as dynamic nor as detailed as say, the Creative X-Fi SoundSystem i600 ($599) that packs in a separate sub-woofer.

The T24's output is bright and somewhat warm. Vocals in particularcome across fairly strong and emotive.

This boom box delivers probably the strongest bass you can get fromany iPod sound system without a dedicated subwoofer. Place it at acorner to turn your bedroom into a pounding disco dance floor.

You can miss out details such as the softer instruments inorchestral music, though. Flute sounds, for instance, lack dynamismand can be drowned by the strong bass.

Unfortunately there are no bass, treble or equaliser controls totweak the sound to your liking: What you hear is what you get.

The T24 made an impressive impact initially, but I found myselfneeding a break after two hours.

It is somewhat like listening to a very charismatic, powerful andentertaining motivational speaker in person - you need anintermission to avoid sensory overload.

FINAL SAY
For iPod owners seeking a sleek and simple sound system thatproduces bright music and a booming bass, the Sonic Impact T24 is asound bet at a fairly good price.
