Pulse Introduces New Low Loss, High Saturation SMT Power Inductor

Pulse , a Technitrol company, introduced the new PG0702NL series of flat-coil surfacemount (SMT) power inductors. These inductors have a low DCR of 0.89to 5.9mΩ and a tight tolerance of plus or minus 6% for higherefficiency. Inductance values range from 0.40 to 3.0µH with apeak saturation of 15 to 45A. Operating frequency is 100kHz to 1MHzat an operating temperature of minus 40 to 130°C with nothermal derating. These inductors are used to store energy andserve as filters in voltage regulator modules (VRMs) used innotebooks, desktop computers, workstations, and servers as well asdc-dc applications, point-of-load (POL) converters, and otherhigh-density, high-power, high-ambient temperature applications.
Pulse’s PG0702NL series uses a ferrite core material whichhas one tenth the core loss of iron powder or iron alloy corematerials. The lower core loss of the ferrite material is optimizedat frequencies above 500 kHz. The decrease in core loss is said tosignificantly increase system efficiency 5 to 10%. Because theferrite material is immune to thermal aging, these inductors aresaid to be reliable at higher operating temperatures.
The PG0702NL series has a self-leaded, round, wire coil which issaid to lower the overall cost of the finished product, providing alower tolerance of the direct current resistance (DCR) to plus orminus 6%. The tight DCR tolerance improves current sensing controland the power supply’s regulation and transient response.
Pulse’s PG0702NL inductors have an industry standard 4040footprint of 10.8 x 9.5 x 8mm and incorporate a three-pin designfor improved mechanical stability. An unconnected third pin at theback of the inductor distributes the part’s weight andbalance between the three terminals during the mechanicalvibration.
Pulse’s PG0702NL Series is RoHS compliant and meets standardEIA481 requirements. Lead time is four to six weeks.
